Emily K. Asencio is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Akron. Her primary research focus is the relationship between identity development and criminal behavior for both juveniles and adults. Recent publications include an article entitled “Can the Criminal Identity be Changed by a Label? Examining the Impact of Labels from and Identity Theory Perspective,” with Peter J. Burke in Sociological Perspectives (2011). Emily is currently working on a grant with the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine examining the influence of Crisis Intervention Team training for police officers in several communities.
